designing robot

i want to design a robot for pipeline inspection..its has work rotary and linear motion..plz give some ideas to construct a robot.

You really need to give more details...

In the mean time you can build a robot with a spinning disk and a linear actuator and that will have fulfilled all the design criteria you've given us...
