If you have an external hardware programmer, try out the latest bootloader v2.1 (attached). I just compiled and tested it, so maybe it will solve some problems the older version had.

Select the appropriate file and upload it using AVR Studio.

None have been extensively tested, so you'll be a beta tester Grin

This boot loader fixes the WDT timer on the Axon. 

With the previous boot loader it would not execute.  However, now it does so correctly.

Its been extensively tested, no problems ever came up.

I also attached a file for the ATmega1280 and ATmega2560, if anyone needs it.

It works with sp3 . . . very very slowly. 'Downgrade' to sp2 for USB to work properly.

You should use v21 with these.
