Arduino?

I've just begun constructing my first robot (loosely following the $50 robot tutorial).

I've seen some things about a platform called Arduino.

I'm very new to electronics and robotics (although i'll start my engineering course at university in a few months).

I'd just like to know what it is? what it does and if it's possible/easy enough to make a similiar robot to the $50 robot using this platform (or whatever it is).
