AVR USB Programmer Compatibility?
« on: January 05, 2009, 02:12:26 PM »
Ok, I want to use AVR Studio to program directly from AVR Studio to my MCU, and I want a wide range of compatible MCU's. The cheaper ones (relatively speaking, AVR ATMEGA STK500 USB Programmer ISP), it does not support the ATMega8. The reason I am going with a USB Programmer because I want to be able to edit fuses, and everything within AVR Studio, so what is my best bet for a cheap, easy to use, USB programmer for the AVR MCU's, under $50.

Really, what ISP USB AVR programmer do you reccommend?

MKII ( pronounced MK2 ) programmer
Check out the Roboduino, Arduino-compatible board!

I use the MKII and it works perfectly. If you want to go a little cheaper Adafruit has a programmer for $22

Yes you can - it's AVRStudio compatible.

That doesnt mean you can program straight from AVR Studio :/. In this case, you must set up a COM port emulator and relay the information from the AVR Studio program to the custom AVR C# Program to the COM Emulator to the USB device, all very wierd, which is why she suggests AVR Dude instead.

Oh, didnt know it was that complicated. The MKII is probably the easiest way, just how airman explained it.

Lol, I think were talking about different things, you mentioned LadyAda's AVR Programmer, and I was talking about that, it is NOT the MKII

Anyway, I think I am going to go with the MK2, but it would be $80.00, airman how much was yours/where'd you get it?

$34 bucks on DigiKey
http://search.digikey.com/scripts/DkSearch/dksus.dll?Detail&name=ATAVRISP2-ND

Does it work with the AtMega8? Because that was the problem, finding programmers compatible with it

And does it support both 10 pin and 6pin?

*All* of the programmers support the ATmega8.

The MKI supports both, but the MKII only supports 6 pin.
