Well a regular band saw isnt as precise as I would like and leaves the job really messy, is there another saw that will leave a precise clean cut, maybe some kind of bit I can put on my drill?

I think your only hope is the item msprague posted and some sandpaper or a power planer. You won't find a planer for much less than 200$ though.

I think you misread my post... the thickness isn't the problem...

Its just a plane...

you just push it across the surface that youre trimming and it planes maybe 0.5mm of wood off at a time

Do you happen to have a dremel with the router attachment? That would give a fairly clean cut.

Hi,

Go buy some 1/4" plywood - it's simple, stronger and more rigid.

Søren

A rather fast and fairly heavy robot with quite large wheels needs what? A lot of power?

Ummm... plywood is a mixture of woods including pine, so i dont see how a thinner mixture of woods is gonna be stronger than a thicker wood with the same ingredient?

A lamination of materials (ie, plywood) is stronger than a single layer of the same material.

1/4" plywood is not as strong as a 3/4" board. Now that being said plywood is stronger than boards of the same thickness. Plywood is also cheaper and more versatile. Plywood also has a higher density which means it's heavier than a board of equal size.

Hi,

Subject is "Trimming 3/4" off of 1" thick wood cheaply?".
Now if you've got 1" and remove 3/4", I'd say you get fairly close to 1/4" ;) and hence the 1/4" plywood recommendation.

I would never consider making a 'bot from regular board, but plywood is quite robust (or robot'st :D)

Well, you can get cut-off accessories for Dremel tools and such, but those are only meant for small trimmings mostly, and as far as I know, they aren't normally big enough to cut through 1" thick wood (someone correct me if I'm wrong).

But If you're just trimming off the length, then just use a handsaw of some sort. It's simple and fast and can be accurate enough (just draw a line down the wood and cut along the line) :P

Haaaaaaaaaaaa

In this case I would use a circular saw:

and a guide clamped to you piece of wood. The sole plate of your saw will "slide" on the guide and you will get a very straight cut.
You could also use a jigsaw, but even with a guide it's harder to keep a straight line.

if i were you, i would simply take your project to your nearest hardware store and ask them to trim the 3/4" off.  At my local RONA, they charge only $1 per cut, no matter how large the cut is.  This is byfar the cheapest option yet... :)

edit: The tool you would want to use for trimming the baord would be a table saw.

if it's length you're cutting, then just take a regular old saw and cut it off ;D
you can get one cheap at your local hardware store, for like 5-10 dollars
