Hi,

Sure you can, a microcontroller "replacing" the R/C-receiver catering for the motors and sensors mounted on the chassis is a good way of learning the basics from.

A rather fast and fairly heavy robot with quite large wheels needs what? A lot of power?

Yep, this tutorial uses the circuit from an rc car ( http://www.societyofrobots.com/member_tutorials/node/284 ) and this one uses the full chasis (http://www.societyofrobots.com/member_tutorials/node/49 ).

an r/c car is a great way to start off if you are able to get some good cirucuitry

theoreticaly all you need to do is plug the r/c circuit into a mcu circuit, the $50 board should work
