Lego sensors on robot

The Lego sensors for the NXT have a similar to phone jack connector can they be cut or removed and then be attached to a microcontroler like a regular sensors?

yes, most can and have. froogle it. there are threads on this forum too about the pinouts of them.

Why not just find mating connectors and keep the sensors intact?

A rather fast and fairly heavy robot with quite large wheels needs what? A lot of power?
