Calling all designers and creative folk...
« on: October 13, 2009, 01:42:47 PM »
My software library 'WebbotLib' is gaining some momentum and I want to add a decent logo.

If you are un-familiiar with WebbotLib then the goal is: to provide a software library, including drivers for sensors/motors/servos etc, that is plug and play. You don't need to understand concepts such as PWM, A2D etc - just plug in and the library 'just does it!'.

Currently I use my 'red/web/bot' as per my Avatar - which was very quickly thrown together with my very limited skills and I know that someone (well probably most of you!) could do better.

My requirement is a  'powered by WebbotLib' kinda thing for use by third parties and perhaps a simpler logo for WebbotLib itself (ie it is NOT powered by itself!)

Design considerations:-

1. I want to keep the spider/web theme - as my surname is 'Webster' and some kinda reference to 'robotics'

2. It may be used during professional printing so I want to keep the number of colours to a minimum - preferably 2 + black. So IF you know Quark/InDesign then a couple of spot/Pantone colours - but if you dont then a JPEG, BMP or SVG would be great

3. Would like a scaleable ie vector format such as EPS or SVG - or failing that a very big JPEG (at least 300dpi) which I can scale down if needed.

Why would you want to rise to the challenge? Well I can certainly credit you in the manual that comes with every download - 'free fame'. If I see a design that is 'super cool' then I would be happy to donate some money - although not a vast amount as this is 'open source' ie free software - to you or to a charity of your choice!

Timescales:- I would like to get something sorted in the next two to three weeks

Are you up for it? If so:- I'd love to hear from you and see your designs.

Colours: well I'm open minded. I think two colours + black would be best for printing purposes. Obviously if you are using Pantone spot colours then you can use different tints (fades) of the colours.

Text: 'WebbotLib' needs to be in there - and for the 3rd party logo either 'Powered by WebbotLib' or maybe better:- 'WebbotLib compatible'. Cannot say 'WebbotLib inside' as it 'may' belong to Intel and also coz you ain't forced to you use my library nor does it come 'pre-loaded'.

Hmmm the professional prints typically require a white background and two colors. Extra $ for a 3rd color.

but if you dont then a JPEG, BMP or SVG would be great
When Webbot says JPEG, he meant to say PNG. JPEG is horribly lossey, and PNG is perfect for 2-3 solid colors. ;D

I only use JPEG 'cause it greatly improves page loading time on a webpage.

SVG is even better for a logo. It is a format for vector graphics so you can scale the picture up/down without losing quality.

SVG is the perfect solution.

I only suggested JPEG etc as I have tools where I can trace it into a scaleable SVG.

Scaleable = I can print it on a poster 20 foot by 20 foot - or any other size - with no loss of detail.

Incidentally JPEG doesn't have to be lossy - you can save with 100% quality in which case nothing gets lost.

As for colours - just keep to a minmum.

It may be that a transparent background is good in case its printed onto something with a background colour - hence you may choose to outline the shape in black in case the background colour is the same as the logo colour to stop it from disappearing. Its then easy to add a background colour underneath if required. SVG does all this.

It also allows me to generate JPEG/Ping files (of any size) for use in web pages etc.
