Obstacle Avoidance for Irobot Create with Command Module

Hello. I have a 3 1/2 feet high robot mounted on a Create that I would very much want to avoid obstacles. It has the original command module attached to it. Before I buy any new hardware(sonar) for this purpose, any informative input will be very much appreciated.
