Robot vision

Hi, I am looking into different options for robot vision. I wanted to get your take on what camera systems you would reccommend.

My main criteria are that I would like it to be controllable by uart, spi, i2c, etc.
It should be fairly inexpensive a.k.a. at least under $300
Along the lines of a CMU cam or a Blackfin.

I have read the tutorials and was just wondering if anyone had found a different alternative .

Oh and it should be able to work with MEGA AVRs but I can't imagine that being a problem
