Hello!
I have tried to work with this type of problem, and have generated
a solution that worked for me, and you have suggested.
Use
ceramics; They can endure high temperatures, relatively easy to handle;
lighter than concrete, and the technology for this type of material is readily
avaliable. I would look on the website of
instructables, which may help.
On your outside insulator, concrete, it may be the best solution, to avoid accidental
incidents. (protection for you) There are different types of concrete, in which you could select
to see which one best suited your purposes. Another type of insulator is a ceramic cloth,
used in oil fired funaces, and relatively cheap. A power supply would depend on the heating
element that you would choose to use. If AC, then you would want a temperature controller,
along with feedback to maintain the temperature. Perhaps even a MCU to ensure a quality
that you are satisfied with?

Sounds interesting.....
