Ques. about $50 robot programmer
« on: October 24, 2008, 12:44:49 PM »
The AVR STK Serial Port Dongle Programmer that was listed in the guide is out of stock at sparkfun.com :(

Im kinda noob and I wanna know if I can use the AVR STK Parallel Port Dongle Programmer (product# PGM-00013
 on digikey.com) .

Can I use it?  Do I have to make any modefications to the circuit?
or is there another place where I  can get the AVR STK Serial Port Dongle Programmer?  I called all the local electonics stores around me, and i did a google search, but there is no other place that I can find it. :(

Or do you think is should just get the AVR ISP2 Programmer for $34?
What is the difference between the AVR STK Serial Port Dongle Programmer , the  AVR STK Parallel Port Dongle Programmer, and the AVR ISP2 Programmer?  Why is the AVR ISP2 Programmer so much more expensive?  (is it bettwe, in which way?)
thanks in advance, and srry for my noobness

do you have a parallel/printer port on your comp?

get the AVR ISP MKII programmer for $34 bucks if you don't wanna bother screwing around as much.

I used the serial programmer and it was a big hassle and headache.

ask yourself...how much is your time worth?

wherever you see the word "dongle" just remember, it has no intelligence built into it.
Serial programmer uses a serial port (don't use it with a usb to serial adapter, it doesnt work that well)
Parallel programmer uses a parrallel/printer port
AVR ISP MkII uses a true usb port, has built in intelligence to tell you its status with an LED, and is very fast. and you can program directly with AVR Studio instead of having to use PonyProg for the above two programmers. AVR Studio is much easier to program the Fuses of the MCU, because of the more intuitive GUI.
