Title: Selecting motor for self balancing robot.
Post by: peek-a-boo on January 11, 2016, 01:28:54 PM
I'm thinking of building self balancing robot. (Thinking of using encoders to measure the distance covered)
My first question is, should I go for servo motor or Brushless DC motor?

The robot should be able to traverse on smooth surface, carpeted surface and surface inclined at 10 degrees angle.
How do I calculate the required rpm and torque of the motor?

Thank you.

you will want to use a servo (which just means there is close loop feedback control) so that could be a brushless motor or any other type of motor. Brushless servo motors are very common in industrial applications. if you have a geared reduction (which you will probably need) low backlash will be very important.
