Microsoft RDS

Hello,
My name is Gal, Im MSc student for mechanical engineering and Im new to the robots world.
I need some advice:
In need to simulate a robotic arm. I mean I want to build it as I would in reality but I want only to simulate it on a computer. Im not going to need real hardware but I will have to write the code for everything to work.
I d/l Microsoft RDS. do you think its the right tool for this mission? would you recommand other software?
Any suggustions in general?

What do you need to simulate for the arm?

(ie, what are you testing, results you need, etc)
