Hey guys, I've found this joystick at http://www.robotshop.ca/home/products/robot-parts/communication-control/rc-communications/phidgets-mini-joystick-sensor.html (http://www.robotshop.ca/home/products/robot-parts/communication-control/rc-communications/phidgets-mini-joystick-sensor.html), but I know that most gaming controllers have the same set up and wondering if you could cut a square around it, do a little soldering, make some wires coming out and save $25? Is it that easy, or do you have to get a chip or something?

I'm confused on what you plan to do with the joystick . . .

yes please tell us more about what you intend to do with it. this will help us understand the situation and make our job of helping you a lot easier.

buy a wii nunchuck, you can communicate it with I2C or dissect it and there will be a 3 axis accelerometer and a joystick inside you can hack.
or you can get a cheap used PS1 controller and do the same thing, except the PS1 controller uses SPI.

Cool!!! But I love b$tch$ng companies that sell after products...
Just get a Playstation 2 controller (the el chipo once) and solder 'em out!!! Just like I did!!!

wow. thats cool. ive got about 6 or 7 ps1 controllers that lie around. except some are werid and like can twist in the middle (namco) so ya ill try and find one and do that. have you got anymore pics of how to do that?

Now thats what im talking about ;), but does it opperate just like it would if you used the whole controller? (what i'm trying to says is, is there a chip involved any where in the schematics from the joy to microcontroller?)
I'm thinking about making my own controller for a robot that will use 4 joys altogether. (still working on design)

I don't know if PS1 controllers are analog... if so... hit 'em hard....
No... I involve no chip... It's just to trimmers and a tact switch so a ATMEGA8 would do nice with two of 'em...
And if you don't want the tact switch to be on a interrupt you could interface more!!!
I'll come with a schematic and more pictures soon!!!
Keep on b$tch$ng!!!
Cheers

Now I'm not a big fan of a joy stick that just pushes buttons and only gives out I/O signals. :-\ That is unless I can't help it. TrickyNeko, does your joystick still have the pots in them?
