Does anyone know what is the best type of actuator for moving in very minute and precise movements continuously, over and over used with a USB control system?
Would it be a solenoid.. or a stepper motor.. or a servo.. or a linear actuator?
This would need to be pretty small too. The robot will only have a couple inches of travel.
Any help would be much appreciated!

Sounds like a stepper motor (http://www.societyofrobots.com/actuators_steppers.shtml) is what you want. If you can't find one that has exactly the precision you need, pick the closest and use gears (http://www.societyofrobots.com/mechanics_gears.shtml) to adjust the precision.

Thanks for the response, Gopher! I'll start researching those.
