Instant Message Group
« on: May 19, 2008, 09:30:03 PM »
I want to have sort of like an IM group of some SoR members. However no complete newbies - people with some experience in robotics only

So if you want to communicate through IM ,post your screename  here ( in either MSN, AIM, or GMAIL)

My MSN screenname is  [email protected]

You can IM me if you want to. If i feel that you are a complete noob , then I will politely refer you to the forum and not reply to any extra questions from you. If I feel you have an interesting project , I will continue chatting with you and helping you out. Those who chat with me already know that I give good advice and that I can help them out a lot.

So please , only post your screenname if you have some experience in robotics or are working on an interesting project.

If you want to only chat with me and dont want your screenname public , just PM me with the screenname.

Remember, this is not instead of the forum ,all it is is instant advice for advanced/interesting projects or just misc. robotics talk , etc.

,Eric

I'm always interested in chatting ;) Not that much experience in robotics. I'm a computer science graduate student with lots of programming experience (C/C++/Java/Python/LISP), and basic electronics knowledge.

I'm roue at sympatico dot ca on MSN if anyone is interested.

Just an FYI, if you go to your user details in the forum, you can add your msn/aim screen name to add an icon for it next to you name.

Oh, and don't ever ever ever IM me any robotics questions!!! I can barely keep up with the forum as is! :P

wouldn't it be easier if we just created an IRC room? IRC can be accessed by very simple clients, either desktop software (like mIRC) or java clients (which can be run in a browser) or flash-based.
This way, we wouldn't need 4 clients to talk to everyone. I, for instance, use yahoo messenger, and I'm not thinking of installing another three.

we could also have an IRC room for newcomers, one for contests, etc. IRC is a pretty permissive and chatroom oriented protocol, which would serve the community in a better way. IMO, at least :P

there is a #robotics channel on freenode.net already with 52 people in it. I might check it out sometime.

I don't think this forum has reached critical mass to support its own IRC channel.

I dont think IRC is such a good idea right now because there arent that many people who are available to chat.

This instant message group is basically just adding in a robotics group to your IM client, because you are anyway on that talking to friends so while you are on that you have an addition of an IM group

i know, and i understand that.
but my point with irc is simple: i have yahoo. i don't want to install 3 other clients (gmail, aim, msn). and i'm pretty sure no one else does. multi-protocol clients are buggy IMO, or don't have all the options.

so, IRC is simpler. I keep my browser on all the time the computer is on, and about half the time an IRC. An IRC client in java will work for everyone, and all you need is an extra tab. it might have other benefits, for example, live tutorials.

Of course, that's just my opinion :P

For anyone that is interested, Pidgin is an opensource multi protocol IM client which is very stable imo. It will run just about any protocol you have an account on. More information can be found at http://www.pidgin.im/ if you are interested. As for me, i hold degrees in computer science and math and currently have 2 projects i'm working on. I'll help out where i can if i'm online, just please don't ask me math homework questions, I won't respond :D (losthero at gmail dot com)
