Wireless Control
« on: March 30, 2009, 11:54:58 AM »
Hey Guys / Girls?

I need some help to build the following:

An autonomous robot running (on a 100meter track max) backwards and forwards, but i also need to be able to manipulate it's position remotely via PC, in other words be able to tell it wirelessly to go to a certain point.

I am shure the 50buckbot will do the trick for letting it move backwards and forwards, but how do i go about doing it wirelessly(on demand)?

I also need to use powerfull motors with alot of torque (so the basic servo's wont do)

Can someone please push me in the right direction? IE: basic board design, wireless technologies and components to use? Money aint really a big issue, as it will be sponsered, i just need to put together a streamlined bot.

I will really appreciate your help. Even just links will do.

Thanx

 ??? ??? ??? ???

First I would go with downloading Google sketchup and start designing the bot, you know the specs it needs, so an hour or so in it will get you a robot sketch up.

Next you will probably want to buy a BlueSMiRF Gold for bluetooth so you can drive your robot via computer using bluetooth (robotshop.us has it same with sparkfun.com)

Motors are all over the place, you know the torque you need and speed, go with DC motors than build your own gearbox for more torque.

Now for the brains of the robot I would go with the Axon or the Roboduino if you don't want to build your own. They both are very good, (I use the roboduino)

thanx for the speedy response,

I have two servos : Speed (sec): 0.24, Torque (Kg.cm): 3.40

The unit is going to be about (3.5kg ... 7.7 pounds), and have to move @ walking pace (5.6km/h .... 3.5 mph).

I guess the servo's will do.

Regarding the brains, hehe, I saw the roboduino, and i will use that to start off with, but i would ultimately like to learn more nout MCU's, i really got hooked on robotics the past few days.

Servos speed is sec for 60 degrees of spin. This servo goes 50 RPM (I think) so think about that.

hmmm, i guess it would be limited with the servo's then,

I also have powerfull dc motors and a LRP Sprinter, this i am sure will do the trick right? i just have no idea how i will hook it up with the roboduino MCU.

to hook up a dc motor to your roboduino you will need to buy/make a motor drive :)
Howdy

i thought the LRP Sprinter is the Motor Drive?

sorry if i sound stupid...

I guess they won't.
(Not by a long shot).

A rather fast and fairly heavy robot with quite large wheels needs what? A lot of power?

LRP Sprinter is a motor driver. Should work for your application.

Hi,
I guess they won't.
(Not by a long shot).

Soeren, thanx, i figured it out eventually..

=============================================

LRP Sprinter is a motor driver. Should work for your application.

thanx Razor

====================================

Final Decision:

I will use the 50buckbot MCU, and add support for bluetooth and the motor drive. This should be the simplest solution. (i think... bare in mind i am still a novice/noop/beginner).

this should allow me to programme the device to do basic forward backwards commands, and the bluetooth will allow me to controll it remotely via pc..

if at any stage i am wrong here, please let me know.

thanx for the support people
