Not too long ago I came across an article about a cheap 30 dollar hand controlled by yarn. I just thought of it now and realized a handful of servos added to the ends of those strings and suddenly you have a low cost robotic hand.

How do you gentlemen recommend hooking up the strings to the hand? I'm thinking a number of multiple rotation (but not full rotation) servos with wheels attached that act like a pulley system on the strings.

i saw soemthing on Mythbusters liek that using bycycle chain. ANy1 else saw that episode?
-
Yeah I saw that episode... dont remember anything about it though :P
Ive been looking to do something like this for a while and was hoping I was being at least slightly original when I came up with the idea... but then I see already made plans and such wide spread over the net lol

Now this reminds me of a video posted here a while ago:

Hope it gives some inspiration...

Got the dowels and all materials needed for the hand. I am going to be using a thin wire instead of yarn - both for strength and ease to incorporate servos with the wire.
Right now I'm shopping for a set of 5 cheap cheap partial rotation servos. If you got a nice one to recommend drop me a link.
I'm debating what to do after getting motors running the initial hand. Should I build a senored glove to act as a control? Hmmm...

google nintendo power glove

Ooooh good idea - I have a comic book shop that sells old hardware like that too. I might be able to snag one for the cheap.

ok i tried making one of those the other day when i saw mythbusters....the string keps snapping :'( but i eventually set up my motors so they stopped at a certain time....i put it on my robot....it weighs way to much. robot keeps flipping..
oh well great idea tho.

I just got an e-mail from my school - the hand has been finished. I started it over winter break but didn't finish in time so my wood working genius father finished it for me. I'll post pictures of it once I get it.
