$50 robot micro-controller alternative?

Hello,

I want to do the $50 robot tutorial, but I wont seem to be able to get my hands on a ATmega8 AVR micro-controller. I live in the Netherlands so I try to get it from a Duch store, but it seems to be out of stock everywhere. Even DigiKey.com and mouser.com don’t seem to have them in stock too.

Is there a good (and affordable) alternative for the ATmega8 AVR? I don’t want to go experimenting on my own, as its my first experience with micro-controllers. You guys probably say there are plenty alternatives, but the micro-controller programming part is the part that I find the hardest because I don’t have any experience in that subject. That’s why I want to follow the tutorial specially on that part. Is that possible with an alternative for the ATmega8 AVR?

atmega168 should work great, at the end of the 50 dollar tutorial there is a link on how to do the small software changes for the 168
