Personally, I would try NOT to use the pictures to make your connections, but rather the circuit diagram.
I always find it difficult to use pictures to make connections. You should be able to follow the circuit diagram and make sure the right connections are made.
This is why I always prefer to use a breadboard to prototype my circuit before soldering, to make sure the circuit diagram works.
I have personaly gotten to the point where I do everything in Eagle, do my schematic in Eagle, than make my board and fab it myself.
I find that it is a better learning experience and I understand the circuit much better, and I end up saving time in the long run as well, but I still prototype before fabricating.
