robot or human position tracking

i would like to know , if there is a way to divide a room into grids virtually(in some software..please let me know if any such exist) and track the coordinates of the bot or a person wrt a reference
any help is very much appreciated

Of course there is.
Read the tutorials and articles found by clicking on "Robot Tutorials" in the upper right corner of this screen. There is some info on how this can be done to get you started.
