However, if you would like help programming a killer robot to send to your former web-host, I will gladly lend my skills. What was the name of that company anyway?

good news!

I convinced my host (lunarpages) to let me have access to their old backup files (they almost charged me).

As such, I now updated all the member tutorial files so that all works now, plus I got all the file attachments for the forum.

SoR is now ~98% operational.

About the backing up files automatically: Im guessing you dont have a network link to the servers hard drive(s)? If not then a batch file is out of the question. But, I might be able to write a java application that automatically downloads the files from the internet location and stores them wherever you want. That is of course after a little bit of research. I havnt written a java program that accesses the net yet...

ok so bad news again . . .

there is this wierd file corruption thing going on with members tutorials . . . i would go to certain admin links (without even changing anything) and the whole thing will just die until I reuploaded the database backup.

not sure why . . . anyway, it will be down until i figure that out . . .

and i still haven't fully fixed the forum . . . lots of hidden bugs i need to sort out still

Ok so I got some good news and some bad news about the Members Tutorials. The good news is that I got it back up and running with zero data lost (hurray!). Bad news is that I hadn't backed up the uploaded files (pics and source code) in a long time, so many of those got lost.

If you wrote a tutorial, can you please please please check it to make sure all files are there! (and of course make any fixes). Also, let me know if anything odd happens or doesn't work because I might not have got all the files set properly . . .

I also figured out why I wasn't getting emails. It was a combination of not setting up the return address correctly, and the strange unchecking of the 'Notify me of replies' box when I ported the forum . . .

Lastly, I've learned a lesson from this. Don't trust my host is one of them. The other is that weekly backups isn't often enough, and its annoying to do. Anyone know a program that can be scheduled to back up my entire site onto my laptop automatically? This includes MySQL exports . . .

I haven't a clue on how to get a batch file to ftp files and export MySQL databases . . . was hoping there is a program to just do it all for me . . . know a good tutorial to read up on?

I've got some experience with websites that use MySQL and PHP and how to get your stuff backed up. There's probably not one program out there that will do it all because all hosts have differences. A script could be developed to run on your laptop using the scheduled tasks. The script would do a recursive FTP download of your website files and a mysqldump of all your databases. That's just the basics. If you have more than FTP to work with at your host, much more could be done to make it a simple restore in the event of an outage.

the java idea that hdl_cinc_dragon proposed is easy to do, there are many custom java packages for ftp etc. You can also use it to send php commands (through html) to the mysql database for retrieving, it just depends wether the host systems will let you send commands to retrieve full entry lists so the application knows what it is supposed to get.

I use java applications to communicate with my perl based custom databases so the people I have made shopping sites for have an application that auto retrieves orders and then prints them off directly (if only it could actually send out the products)

I figure I'll give you guys an update on my hair pulling . . .

So I spent another 5 hours yesterday and 2 more today. I think I finally got the member tutorials working.

Feel free to try and test it out now.

It still has this bug I'm trying to figure out, causing the word 'Array' to appear at the top left of every page. I suspect its a theme update problem, so I just need to manually look at the code line-for-line and see whats up . . .

I still haven't figured out how to get the bugs out of the forum, and apparently other SMF forum owners have reported the same bugs.

As for the auto-backup stuff . . . I use Plesk to access everything, and my web coding ability is enough to get by but not much more.

Can you guys send me an example script that accesses a DB for backup? The forum is huge, and so if it does the MySQL gzip option even better.

I just spent two hours on this trying to figure it out . . . apparently the wysiwyg editor isn't working but reinstalling it isn't fixing it . . . no luck

Its gonna take awhile . . . I might have to delay the contest now $:-\$

good news, dunk figured out what was causing the problem with the wysiwyg editor for the member tutorials.

the bad news is that it will take about ~2 hours of coding to fix . . . so it should be fixed by this weekend hopefully.

Ok I mostly fixed the wysiwyg editor in member tutorials. It should work now.

There is still a problem with the css file, but I'm too lazy to go through like 10 pages of css . . . anyway that file only determines look and feel, which is good enough for now . . .

Let me know if you find any further problems.

As an update on the forum . . . still can't figure it out! blaaaaahhhh.

hmmm i quickly threw in some code without trying to debug it . . . thats probably what happened . . . it will take several hours to figure it all out so i'd rather just write robot tutorials for now . . . i haven't written one in like a month!
