Which programmer do you have? If it's the  $34 one, then I could probably help you. More info please.

scroll down towards the bottom until you see this image, then read that section and the one before

If it still doesn't work, check voltages on your programmer pins.

Not really. USB ports are 'virtual' serial ports, dude. :P

What the error means is that it is not detecting the programmer for one of these reasons:
A) programmer not powered up (check voltages)
B) you are telling it to use the wrong port (check device manager)
C) you have another program running that is using the same port (close other programs)

you could or you could buy one.

parts at sparkfun would be cheaper since a usb-serial cable costs $30 at CC or RS
Problems making the $50 robot circuit board?

??? you must use a programmer to program the ATmega8
If you use a programmer to upload a program called a bootloader, then you can use serial for future programming.

nope

the number is a capacitor rating:
100 = 10pF, 101 = 100pF, 332 = 3300pF, 103 = 10000pF = 0.01uF

I don't really understand your question . . .

For a microcontroller to work, it needs a program. To upload the very first program you absolutely must use a programmer, no exceptions. :P

The programmer isnt just a set of header pins that you soldered onto your board, It is a seperate piece of hardware. There are two different ones in the optional list of parts for the $50 robot. Basically its the part that goes between your computer and the electronics board. Once the electronics board is programmed, you can take it away
