Inside an old TV with VCR fitted...
« on: February 10, 2009, 01:13:49 PM »
Ive been before told that TV's can get a fatal static charge or something built up and that i should stick to things like VCR's, what about a TV with a VCR fitted in, well i want the components out of it (and will later in this thread ask what some bits ive found are), however i dont want to harm myself in the doing so. Has any one got any solutions??

Thanks

Joe

The charge usually dissipates within a week, so if you can wait then wait.

if not you could try discharging the load capacitors, just do a google search for discharging tv capacitors. (ps. dont use the screwdriver method)

its stop being used on the 28th of Jan, so it should be fine but is there any way of checking from the outside of the TV?

Thanks

Joe

VCRs don't have screens. if you really want to use a tv screen that may be fatally charged, make sure you stand back and ground the circuit (literally to the ground) with something to discharge any charge that may have built up.

Theres no easy way to tell from the outside.

Sometimes just pressing the power button without it plugged in reduce the charge.

that is a very easy way that i didn't think of ;) if you uNscrew the circuit, do the screwdriver method.

the screwdriver method means shorting the load capacitors by placing the end of a screwdriver between the leads. Sparks, heat, light, potential explosion, potential electrocution. just dont do it.

get a decent rated capacitor if youre going for manual discharge (ideally with a rectifier) and some well insulated tongs or pliers

paul, do you mean a rectifier diode or a different type of rectifier?

Here are some pics of the TV i took apart; can you circle or something round some of the pictures then post them back and tell me what some bits are, and/or what i could use them for.

Thanks

I see a bunch of capacitors, maybe some pushbutton switches, a speaker hanging off the side. That's about it, everything else looks to  be junk.

One of the main problems with salvaging is getting the parts off without any damage to them.

Do be very careful with the CRT ( the screen ) and especially the back of it.  Televisions can carry a charge for years.

From the top picture, it looks like the tuner is on the upper left of the board and the power supply is on the upper right.  The power supply will have some general parts that are fairly common.  The tuner will be more delicate and specialized, but could have some useful parts in it.

Check out the TO220 cases ( 3 leads with the heat shields bolted to the back on the right ).  Chances are they are either power transistors or regulators.  Either one can come in handy.  There look to be some high power resistors ( light blue with 2 leads, or maybe they are inductors ).  You could salvage the electrolytic capacitors ( black and round with 2 leads ).  Speakers are always good to have around.  Keep your eye out for some good sized diodes, or a rectifier in the power supply area as well.

I would google anything you can find a part number on before you take the time to desolder.  Generally, if you can't find a datasheet on the part, it will be useless to you.

Unless you have a hot air station, the chips will be quite difficult to remove, but if you are particularly skilled with an iron and solder wick, it can be done.  I would google the part numbers first to determine if they are of any worth to you first.

Again, don't do anything or touch anything on the back of the CRT.  No reason to get hurt on a salvage mission.  :)

does the tv still work? and i was just wondering, what is the tube that comes down the middle from the screen called? me and a friend took apart a pc screen a few weeks ago and i thought just stay clear of it. all i got was some caps and connectors anyway. so does anyone know what the name of that tube was?

I'm pretty sure that at the back of the screen is an electron gun and a vacuum tube.

TVs use specialized chips specifically designed to do TV things that can't be used elsewhere.

Yep, on the back is the electron gun. Thats useless unless used inside a vaccuum because the electrons will interact with the air particles immediately in front of it.

The entire screen and the conical section leading to the back contain a vaccuum

The main tube in the TV, that you see as the screen is a CRT, or Cathode Ray Tube.

then why wreck it? if you have a good tv you could probibly get more for it than you can parts

hi, i am also thinking of taking apart an old television but the power button doesn't work so could anyone suggest how to discharge the circuitry inside (the load capacitors, i think).

There really isn't anything useful in old TVs, unless you have some strange desire of random capacitors  :D

Well.... If the monitor is still working.... And with some good taste and knowledge you can turn it into a HUD!!!!
But this really requires you know a lot of stuff... not only programming....
So.... Only if you are very willing to do something serious with it.... you may keep it....
Or else.... it's useless.....
It's not worth salvaging resistor and capacitors....

But hey!!! Try to get the flyback.... You can do many thingies with that.... like Jacob ladders and Tesla coils and so on!!!
Still you gotta know about how AC current behaves...... unfortunately.... but....
It's a nice playground..... (but also deadly.... don't say I didn't tell you.....)

i have got things lying around to make a jacobs ladder so i think i'll try and make an HUD later on when i am more experienced in programming because on websites that i have looked on, it says there is the tv screen up a tube and a combiner glass is involved!! maybe later. ;D
