Navigation device for robot
« on: January 26, 2007, 10:39:06 AM »
hi..i'm a noob here....
play with robotics some years ago but haven touch it for a long time.
but now i'm going back at it any planning to take it to the next lvl,
since i was only playing with lego mindstormsets, micromouse and some pack-bots.....ok...
back tothe topic...

i wan to build this robot that can travel to a pre-defined location automatically and at the same time avoid obstacles in its way and dont get lost half way.

Have ideas but dun really know how to do it and wad parts i need and where to get them.

i'm thinking of using GPS to navigate the robot and having a sonar ring to help it avoid obstacles or build a robot that cna read maps--so i can load the area map into the robot then have the robot move to the pre-defined location itself.

can anyone help me with this???

this post might help you some:

what terrain would your robot go on?

what type of obstacles?

indoors or outdoors?

how much $$ you willing to spend? :P

for complete beginners I recommend reading this, as it will give you a direction and a basic understanding:

hmm...

the first link did help by giving some ideas of how to apply GPS.
however, as i'm totally new to using GPS to navigate a robot, guess i'll probably take some time to figure out how to use it.
but still, it helped. thanks.

the robot is for both urban,cross-country terrain(of course i'll start with just urban if it's easier)

obstacle are like buildings, cars..etc for urban terrain and trees, rocks, etc for cross-country.

budget wise, cos i'm army funded, is not so much of an issue cos as long as i can show some results, i can ask for an increase in budget...

Search for robomagellan (also spelled "robo magellan").

Its a competition that is held in several places doing more or less what you are looking for. Perhaps you can hook up with one of the competitors.

I have robot control code that can do a lot of this:
