Is there a way to mod a regular servo to have a freewheeling side for extra support like this:

just add a small lazy susan

Nope - and if you did, it would be too complicated to be useful. However they sell normal servos (not robotic ones) that have the servo horns on both sides so that you can pick which side to use.

Would you mind linking me to some?

Sorry I forgot... but they are pretty high end servos so they might cost as much as the robot servos. Try looking under the JR and Futaba brands also. For some reason in robotics it seems like everyone uses Hitec... but really if servo manufacturers would be car companies, JR and Futaba would be ford and chevy but Hitec would be something like... Saturn. As in, "I drive a saturn." "Saturn??? wtf??" ;D

well ok, I'll figure something out and post it up.
I did email with ServoCity tech, and they don't have any ideas either.
