Building a robot

Greetings honourable users!
 I am very new to the world of Robotics. but i have immense interest in this field. please provide me the basic info and advice on how to make robots for various college competitions.

You question is overly general.  You are asking about "making a robot".  This is a subject that could fill many full size books. 

What you do is first make something VERY simple.  Try making a wheeled platform that does nothing more then run forward at full speed until it crashes into a wall and stops.  Next step, try to make it stop before it hits the wall.  Then think of the next feature to add.

Also, you learn more if you build this from cheap recycled junk like motors from broken ink jet printers, batteries from old cell phones and so on.

It is a mistake to start you first robot with the idea that it could be entered into some kind of competition.  That is for the 6th or 10th robot.

I would offer an opinion.
I would recommend to go to the website Parallax.com, and check out the
basic stamp robot kits. The electronic hookups, assembly, and wiring are
simple. This simplifies troubleshooting, reduces fustration, and gives instant
feedback, which makes your learning curve easier. If you have any problems,
ask a question in the forum, or the Parallax techs, to help you. The main
headache you will have is the programming, and that is reduced, because of the
simplicity of the PIC language they use. Once you master the basics, you can
move on and build your ultimate robot from there! Good Luck!   ;D ;D ;D

Another option is the Sandwich Bot. It is in the book Robot Building for beginners, which can be found on the websites below.

The second option provides a more in depth explanation of robotics. It teaches more about the electronics and mechanics of robotics. The $50 robot provides more info about programming.
