a competition i entered requrires that a robot shld be made which should be solar powered...i wanted to know is there any way by which such a robot can be made cheaply and the power source of this bot shld be the sun...

Yes, there is. Basically, the solar cell(s) will charge your robot's battery pack. Now, the slower you are willing to charge the batteries and the smaller your power needs, the cheaper your outlay for solar cells will be.

If it has to be solar powered I doubt batteries are allowed. It also depends on what the robot has to be and do and any restrictions such as dimensions or wright or anything. Does it have to perform a certain function? Does it have to use a uC to process any data? That sort of thing. More info needed

If you can't use batteries you could use a super capacitor. They can store quite a bit of energy, at least enough that if your robot is in shade for a few seconds it won't turn off.
