I am looking for some way to get cheep (<$300, or even better <$200) binary motor control that can handle a continuous load of +70 amps at 36 volts. Perffbly something I can easily control with a basicatom chip through Futaba/JR style connector. For similar but smaller project I used one of these radio relays (http://www.teamdelta.com/pdf/rce220r5.pdf) with much success
When I tried to figure it out using a series of relays and solenoids it didn't come out much cheaper than a motor controller.
Any ideas?

Hmmm cheap binary control . . . a relay can easily handle those specs. What you want is to connect a digital output pin from your controller to a MOSFET (a transistor), then control a relay through that MOSFET.
I believe there are MOSFETS today that can handle those specs without the relay, but you may have difficulty keeping it from frying itself . . .
