Linearly moving a 5mm x 1m rod along its length

Looking for ideas.
I need to move a 5mm (19/32) x 1m (36) rod along 90% of its length. The drive (motor with pinion?) for the rod is fixed at a single point and the rod needs to move freely both forward and backwards without interference. The rod will be in a fixture where it is supported. I considered using a low rpm motor with a Pinion Gear but I cant find a corresponding geared tube - needs to be round and not square. The rod will encounter some resistance so a non-geared solution may not work.
Someone on the forum must have solved this or a similar problem before. Any help or suggestions would be very much appreciated.

I would need more information. I can give you an idea, that may help.
If you take a bolt of expected length, and drill though the center, (5 mm)
you could use the bolt to ride on the rod, while the thread of the bolt could be
used for a gear or to secure a bracket on. hope that helps.
