When I first learned about using waterjet cutting to build parts for robots, I thought it was a neat technology, but didn't see how it could help me in parts where I felt I needed three dimensional cutouts, like in gearboxes and frames.

Over time though, I've learned that there are fewer limitations than I thought. By using a variety of techniques, you can overcome many of the limitations. For example, the motor mounts, frame, and lifting arms on my latest robot are all waterjet cut (http://letsmakerobots.com/robot/project/12-pound-fighting-robot-dragoncon-robot-battles).
