Title: hobbyist arrested: building nuclear reactor at home
Post by: Admin on August 04, 2011, 06:52:50 AM
I thought this was amusing . . . a nuclear hobbyist collected various radioactive sources and wanted to attempt to split atoms at home. He wasn't sure it was illegal or not, so called the authorities to ask. Police came over and confiscated in stuff . . .

(his actual crime was the possession of radioactive materials, although it's unclear how much he actually had)

Good thing making world dominating robots isn't illegal . . . yet . . .

That's pretty entertaining.  Have you ever read the Radioactive Boy Scout?  It's about some kid who bought a bunch of defective smoke detectors for cheap and built a nuclear reactor in his shed.  My physics teacher told us about it.

I made a video tutorial on using a Geiger counter with a microcontroller and it includes smoke detector material . . . like 2 months ago . . . maybe I should upload it . . . one day lol . . .

He wasn't actually arrested, has been what I've read... Just had the material confiscated.

And I swear everyone I've mentioned this to asks if I've heard about the radioactive boyscout...

Hmmm.... someone should build a smallish nuclear reactor for home.  :)

Just make it so that people can't take it apart.  I love the idea.  :)

I can take anything apart with my dremel...

I can take anything apart with my dremel...

And I can take anything apart with a sledgehammer.  I mean use security screws and locks so normal people can't take it apart. We're not normal ok?  ;D  Just because you have a security screw bit set at home doesn't mean you can take apart anything you want.   ;)

Actually, it's really easy to make anything into a flathead screw with a dremel. lol

corrado33, a true mad scientist would have his own secret island with a giant underground dome guarded with ninjas. And a very hot evil assistant.

I'd settle for the secret island with a giant underground dome.  And maybe the evil hot assistant.  Guarded by robots would be cooler.  :)
