Mini submarine Docking

Hi Robo-enthusiasts,

I am currently working for Festo,Germany. Could someone please give me a headstart in the procedure to follow in order to construct (PCB designing) an underwater docking station for a small submarine?

I have been stuck at this problem for a long time. Any good advice and helpful links are invited.  :)

I would offer my opinion....
In so far as docking stations, the beaglebone community has a group that has
used the beaglebone black for underwater surveying. I would be confident that
the Raspberry Pi group has followed the path too.
In reference to your underwater docking station, I would suggest following
a design based on what is expected of the docking; power charging? data exchange?
cargo reloading?
If you could devulge more process information, I may be able to advise further. :)

Hello mklrobo,
RaspberryPi seems to be a very good option taking into account its size and portability. As for the functions of the docking station; it must be able to recharge the submarine and also transmit the information gathered underwater. Thank you for showing interest and please advice further.

Just read your post, and the recharging is the most daunting part, but I
believe I can solve your problem
Recharging by magnetic induction -- This is done already in
cell phones. Basically, 2 coils come into close contact, one sends
power throught its coil, and the other absorbs the power; and thus
power can be transferred without any contact, and the submarine
remains sealed.
Data could be sent either infrared, or close quarters wireless, while
recharging in the docking station.
If you want the data sent via longer distances, I will have to look

 :) Hello!
I forgot to add, that, Magnetic induction is done everyday by transformers;
but in very close quarters. The power from one winding is passed to another,
usually stepped up the voltage, less current; or stepped down in voltage, more current.
If you do use the charging coil, the coil may be able to double as an antenna, to transmit
data. (this would save space in the sub) When the sub is not charging, a switching circuit
could be made to engauge the transmitter/reciever circuit.
Another idea to consider, never seen this before;(Just thought of it!) 8)
Since whales use "clicks" to communicate worldwide, it might be used to transmit
data. find an audio spectrum that is condusive to your uses, and that may save you
considerable effort in data transmission. Could also be used as sonar. Save space
in the sub.   ;D ;D ;D

Defenses for your sub, from sea critters.
A medium yield LED light, to temporarily stun the fish
off of your sub.
A type of ink, like an Octopus would use. Soap is
a poison to fish; inhibits their ability to breathe.
Use a a last resort, to retireve the sub!($$$)

Woah those are some really awesome ideas to develop a submarine. Let me go through some research papers if someone has found a way to implement the underwater charging system.

Also the idea of communication through whale "clicks" is absolutely amazing. I'll start digging more information on that too. Thanks for the amazing ideas.  ;D ;D
