Circuit Question

Hey all, I have a question about this circuit I made. Its loosely (or not so loosely) based on the 50$ robot. My question is whether or not the way I have the LED setup will work for a status indicator. I have the positive lead connected to signal and the negative lead connected to a resistor which is connected to ground.

My plan is to tell the IC to make that pin go high in order to check if the IC is getting power. Kinda like the opposite of the $50 circuit.
