well it depends on what exactly your looking for, but I have gotten in the past- Double 3 amp H bridge chips, comparators, switching voltage regulators, amplifiers, 555 timers, and many more useful chips. They even 2 day ship it to you for free.

No need to lie really. I asked for a small sample of LEDs as a student and they sent me 20 LEDs for free. If you have caller ID you don't have to pick up if they do call though.

If you program with PICs... Microchip has a whole page devoted to samples and don't mind giving them out.

Companies usually mass produce stuff and have so many in stock. They don't mind giving them out, because there is the possibility that that thing you made with the chip will become popular, and when mass producing, you'll end up purchasing their chip and they'll make money on it. Sooooooo, if you say you're building a 'prototype', they may be very obligated to getting those parts to you.

If they call, just tell them the truth that you're a student. It's unlikely though.

pretty much what nanobot said is true, just be honest if in the remote possibility they do. However-these are very very large companies, and have absolutely no time to go back and call every person that asks for samples to make sure they were an actual business. It has never happened to me, and I seriously doubt it would ever happen to anyone else.

and this morning a load of chips arrived at my door. Nice plastic chip cases aswell!

transcievers as in radio sender and receiver? so in example you can use it instead of plugging in the serial cable?

They are like MAX232 ICs except they receive and transmit and can handle much higher voltages, protecting the chip connected to it.

Have you tried Microchip?

They dont allow you to order samples from accounts with generic ISP emails (gmail, yahoo, hotmail, etc), but if you can get a private email address from somewhere, maybe if you or your friend owns a domain name, then you can order a few PICs from there.

Quite a long delivery time though, 2 weeks at least.

Yeah, if you use PICs, Microchip has a wide variety of chips they give for samples. I have to check out Maxim and such, I'm interested in more parts. Thanks

I am in India, I will have a look at the website you provided. I hope they dont ask for the 'postal/delivery charges'. I think they might, because of the international parcels are damn costly, atleast for me at the time being.

I just got some samples from RAMTRON they were quite easy to get and they also sent me paper copies of the data sheets, a pen, a little plastic ramtron man shaped logo and an up to date sales brochure - thats what i call good service.
The products i ordered were:

4 x 65,536 * 8 bit (512kb) fram controlled with 2 wire i2c bus (45 year data retention plus 10billion write cycles meaning you can use them like normal sram but they dont lose data when you switch power off)

i also got 4 x 512*8bit(4kb) these are the same as above but with 10¹² write cycles (thats 10,000,000,000,000 write cycles with none volatile data)

I only ordered these but i wish i got more, they are so easy to use
