I have the L298, is it possible to just program my ?C to give a PWM-ed signal to the input of the L298?
Will the L298 be able to handle that?
And is it possible to use PWM with
any
motor driver IC ?

Yes. Just make sure you dont go into some super high frequencies if your IC cannot handle it.
About 10kHz is good for most of IC i think.
