Title: Need help buying parts and making sure i have the right parts for the $50 robot.
Post by: livid86 on July 04, 2009, 12:02:04 AM
Hello Everyone,

I've finally saved up enough money and found a good enough tutorial to get me started in robotics. I'm trying to follow the $50 robot guide and having a little bit of trouble finding some of the parts and just need someone to check i have got the right parts. I live in Australia and it's extremely expensive to get parts from America.

I live near a dse.com.au, and a jaycar.com.au. (Those are obviously urls and not shop names) and i'm happy to order online.

I appreciate any help and input that i can get. I'll show you what i already have found and what i need.

Hitec HS-311 servo - http://tinyurl.com/lw8xfz (http://tinyurl.com/lw8xfz)

5V Linear Regulator - http://tinyurl.com/n3jq4j (http://tinyurl.com/n3jq4j)
ATmega8 AVR - http://tinyurl.com/kq4zk6 (http://tinyurl.com/kq4zk6)

28 pin DIP socket - haven't found
220uF+ Electrolytic Capacitor      - http://tinyurl.com/kupoo3 (http://tinyurl.com/kupoo3)

.1uF Ceramic - http://tinyurl.com/lxp7er (http://tinyurl.com/lxp7er)
36 position breakaway male header - not found :(
340ohm resistor - i can't find
1.62Kohm resistor - can't find
LED    - i don't think i can go wrong with an LED
CdS Photoresistors  - can't find
Grid-Style PC Board - should be able to get one close to this at dse or jaycar

I haven't got a programmer but will this do the job?

I'm not sure weather that actually programs them or is a connector to a development board or something.

Thanks so much,
I know this is a big ask but there are very kind people out there.

Thanks again,
Cory

gahhhzomgs! i knew there were other australians out there!
those are the exact servos i got!

28 pin DIP socket - haven't found-- dse or jaycar should have these, otherwise check futurlec.com.au
5V Linear Regulator - http://tinyurl.com/n3jq4j (http://tinyurl.com/n3jq4j)
ATmega8 AVR - http://tinyurl.com/kq4zk6 (http://tinyurl.com/kq4zk6)
220uF+ Electrolytic Capacitor      - http://tinyurl.com/kupoo3 (http://tinyurl.com/kupoo3)
.1uF Ceramic - http://tinyurl.com/lxp7er (http://tinyurl.com/lxp7er)
36 position breakaway male header - not found Sad dse has this.
340ohm resistor - i can't find dse has this
1.62Kohm resistor - can't find dse has this
LED    - i don't think i can go wrong with an LED
CdS Photoresistors  - can't find dse has this
Grid-Style PC Board - should be able to get one close to this at dse or jaycar dse has this exact one!
the programmer looks fine, im looking at buying the exact one :P
if you fail to find the parts, futurlec.com.au has all the parts for this project besides the servos etc...
and theyre only about 1/3 the price... and shipping is $4!

Those are all right.

Possibly. I've not used that so I can't tell you for sure.

28 pin DIP socket - haven't found
36 position breakaway male header - not found :(
340ohm resistor - i can't find
1.62Kohm resistor - can't find

Two 14-pin DIP sockets end-to-end will also work.

You don't need one 36-pin break-away header. If you can find a few smaller headers, totaling enough pins, then that will do.

You could also try this, a Society of Robots parts kit: http://www.circuitgizmos.com/products/cgsorkit1/cgsorkit1.shtml (http://www.circuitgizmos.com/products/cgsorkit1/cgsorkit1.shtml)

The $50 robot tutorial contains links for people buying from the UK (where I am) - and NO it wasn't written by me!

Why don't you folk from other countries create a Member Page eg '$50 robot parts in Australia', or '$50 robot parts in Greece' with links to all the various suppliers and links to any other posts eg programmers that worked/didn't.

Am sure Admin would give you links from the $50 project page to this reference in order to help others.

Just a thought

i made an Australian parts list ages ago...
