Title: Motor selection
Post by: Bern37 on March 16, 2015, 03:24:52 PM
Looking for suggestions on motor brands.  I need drive and steering motors for mid to large size bot.  (120 to 150 pounds)  Plan on using wheelchair motors.  Will have one on each rear wheel.  Found a guy with many motors from various brands.  At this time I don’t know what all he has.  Any inputs on the best, or stay away from,  brands.  I plan on seeing him and his collection soon and see if he has what I need.   Thanks

 :) Hello!
I would offer an opinion.
Something that size, that has a demand for power, would probably be
in the industrial arena. As for particular brands, you could paruse Youtube
for some people using robotic motors. ServoCity has some motors, as well as
some other vendors in this forum.
I had a robot I was working on, that needed power in the range you are suggesting.
I found people throwing away old electric bicycles, or selling them at flea markets,
or in a bargain trader. These motors are relatively cheap, but may need some
TLC. You will need a battery to accomodate the juice the motors demand, and
that is something that you may not be able to get around. To keep the motor from
turning, or freewheeling after a command was given, I had to come up with a
electric clutch. When the robot moved, the clutch disengauged; when the
robot stopped, the clutch engauged. Keep me posted. Good Luck!  :) :) :)

I am aware of some brands that produce high quality motors such as Maxon and Portescap but i'm not sure if they get into the bigger sizes you are looking for. I would focus on finding a motor that best fits your requirements then if you still have several options look at how well they are built or the manufacturer but i think that first part will narrow your options much quicker.
