corkscrew method for staircase climbing robot

A very neat method of climbing stairs. I wonder how staircase size/angle and robot weight affect climbing ability . . .

Whoa! Cool method. ;D

I suppose the only problem with this setup is the efficiency of the drive train. Because of the rotation, a lot of the energy seems to be pushed outwards other than being devoted to pulling the robot up the stairs. But it looks like the casters make up for much of it.

It reminds me of a certain all terrain RC toy...the drive train was similar with the corkscew setup...of course, the battery life was really bad...

Ahh...yes. My friend had (or still has) one. It actually did work well in some terrains...until the battery started to die 10~15 minutes later  :D

That could work like omniwheels, plus can climb stairs. Cool!

My bro got one for christmas a few years back.  Lasted like 10 min on a full battery charge.  It was capable of "driving" on water...up until the non-waterproof battery seal let water into the toy, killing it - not kool. At the time i had no use for it, so we threw the thing away....wish we hadn't  :P

You know, if they could  build something like in 1929 out of cast iron they could defiantly build something high performance today.

although inefficient, a design like that might be well suited for a mars rover....i mean if u were to spin both cylendars in the same direction you could travel diagonally foreward...plus the cylendars could just be air filled, so they can just bascially engulf themselves over rocks....
