UUV Events in DC and NH

There are two major UUV events coming up, and I figured some of you in the area may be interested.

The first is kind of expensive . . .
International Symposium on Unmanned Untethered Submersible Technology (UUST), held at the New England Center, in Durham, New Hampshire, USA on August 19th-22nd, 2007
I have already paid for it, so if anyone else is going give me a heads up so we can meet.


The other UUV event is entirely free, located near Washington, DC:

Event: ASME Family Picnic
At the 9th Annual International Submarine Races

Date: Friday, June 29th, Rain or Shine
Time: 9:00 am ? 2:00 pm

Place: Naval Surface Warfare Center's Carderock Division David Taylor
Model Basin in Bethesda, Maryland and the Carderock Recreation Area

Cost: Free. (However RSVP is required. Please see details below)

Program: Bring your families to the 9th International Submarine Races,
where 23 university and independent teams compete for the world speed
record in human-powered submarines. The races are held in the 3,200 ft
long David Taylor Model Basin at the Naval Surface Warfare Center,
Carderock. Every year, the teams gather here to don their scuba gear, get
in their vehicles, and race. The two person speed record, set in 2005 by
the University of Quebec, stands at 7.061 knots. This year will see the
addition of tandem races and 3D slalom courses to make the challenge even
greater.

We?ll plan to meet on base. We?ll be shown around the competition area
and be able to meet the contestants prepping their vehicles outside in the
parking lot. The first ever slalom races will be ongoing throughout the
day and can be watched from the water?s edge and via the underwater
cameras rigged for the event. We?ll also get a chance to tour some of the
other Navy test facilities on the base.

Lunch: At noon, we?ll start heading over to the Carderock Park just off
base for relaxation and a barbeque picnic by the river.

Important Safety Note: The Model Basin is a large open pool surrounded by
lots of test equipment and machinery. We will be free to walk around
somewhat informally, and supervision is not provided. Children under 6
are not permitted on the tour, but are welcome at the picnic.

RSVP Instructions: The event is on a Navy base, so there?s a procedure to
follow. Anyone can attend as long as security forms are submitted in
advance for security purposes. Note the restrictions on cameras and
camera cell phones which are not permitted without advance authorization.

Providing ages for kids coming along will help us focus the tour.

Driving Directions: Carderock is extremely easy to reach, and it is only 2
minutes from the Capital Beltway (I-495), Maryland Exit 41.

From Maryland, take I-495 south toward Northern Virgina. Take Exit 41,
(last exit in Maryland, prior to the bridge) toward Carderock. This will
put you on westbound Clara Barton Parkway.

From Virginia, take I-495 north toward Maryland. After passing the George
Washington Parkway exit, get in the extreme right lane as you cross the
American Legion Bridge into Maryland. This is an exit only lane for the
Clara Barton Parkway (Exit 41). Caution: The exit ramp forks very soon
after you exit. Take the left fork for Carderock. This will put you on
westbound Clara Barton Parkway.

Once on Clara Barton Parkway, you may note that David Taylor Model Basin
is on your right (the very long building). Take the first exit off the
parkway, making a right into the main entrance to the base.
