Evolution ER1 question

I am trying to resurrect our ER1; I want to avoid using the included software due to OS limitations (the SDK ran under RedHat 6, if I remember correctly!).    I know there's been several threads over the years---did anyone successful write code to directly read the IR sensors?     I have found some examples of motor control code, but the IR sensors would be great to have working.
