« on: April 21, 2008, 12:36:14 PM »
I just got this in my email. I won't be going, but if anyone does please take pics and vids!

his is an invitation for anyone in the Phoenix area June 6-8 to
attend the National Robotics Underwater Challenge. 24 teams will
compete in an underwater remotely operated vehicle competition. The
underwater portion of the competition will start at 8PM on Saturday
night and run till 4 in the morning. A special viewing facility will
be set up for the public. Robots and teams can be visited in the pit
area Saturday afternoon.

For more information go to

Last year was the first year of the event, 9 teams competed from
Arizona high schools and colleges. This year we have expanded to a
limit of 24 teams, with three teams from California, Oregon, and

This is a nationally recognized competition with judges from Woods
Hole Institute, the US Navy, corporate and academic institutions.

The underwater competition will start Saturday night at 8PM at the
Chandler High School Aquatic Center, Chandler, AZ. Each team has 30
minutes to guide their robot to a sunken aircraft wreckage (made of
PVC pipe and plastic tarps) at the bottom of a pool to investigate
the crash and recover life-saving serum.

Each robot has an on-board camera, plus there will be eight
underwater cameras around the pool to capture the action. Arizona
State University will have a portable production studio on site and
an auditorium will be available for the public to follow the action.

Teams will be judged on oral presentations, technical reports,
presentations to the public, as well as the underwater competition.

For those not able to attend, the underwater competition will be
broadcast over the internet.
