Faster Video Transfer
« on: September 12, 2007, 02:48:33 PM »
How can I increase the speed of my web cam video transfers over the internet?

Any ideas? I'm using wifi so maybe I should make an antenna or something...
Please help

Or better yet, how can I make my own online video transfer program that is optimized for speed?

I need help ASAP

Thanks,
Eric

Just some ideas, but Im no expert for sure . . .

get better bandwidth
reduce image resolution
reduce image colors (greyscale is best)
image compression

Im sure you can find some of those options in your camera software.

hi Eric,
can you explain a bit more about your setup?
how is your camera currently relaying pictures?
what frame rate are you currently getting (approximately)?
what type of software are you using to transfer the pictures?
is there other software operating on the same network connection using up your bandwidth?
are you actually sending this over the internet or just to your home network?

for reference a typical webcam will send pictures at 640x480 pixels at 30fps over a wireless ethernet connection with no problems.

if you are connecting to this from out on the internet over your home internet connection the chances are you will need to drop either the picture resolution or the frame rate for reliable results. it all depends how fast the internet connection you are using at either end is.
in this case you will have to do a bit of investigating to find the bottle neck.

i tend to get half that resolution at half that frame rate when i webcam with people on the other side of the world (europe/asia) . . . but for local stuff that sounds about right . . .

as dunk said, if we understand your setup better, we might be able to give more detailed help . . .

yup. i was only talking about wireless ethernet on your home network.
once you go outside your home network it is dependant on the contract you have with your ISP and the contract the remote station has with theirs.
