Applying for Samples

Hello. Well, before i ask, i just want to point out that i have found the websites, and the forms for where to apply for parts. My question is, do you just sign up and thats it? What sort of comment or somthing like that should be included, to make them want to take my request? How do i know when im being too unreasonable?

For things like header pins or other cheap stuff, I can get away with 25 rows of 20 pins, etc. For other things like MCUs, usually 1-3ish.

You dont always have to comment, and if you want to make sure it sounds worthwhile. For some MCU sample requests I put "For use on UAV microcontroller" or something like that.

I usually comment it for a design im doing at work. The last time I ordered free samples I told them it was for an upgrade I was applying to an existing security device. Just use your imagination.

 Also it can help to ask them to supply a custom parts reference for you. So if you are ordering a microcontroller id have asked them to reference it as SSUPPRT14 . It means nothing but it makes it sound like a genuine parts list.

when ordering samples for legitimate businesses and real product design usage, I have often been turned down, so never be put off if you get refused.

If they ever call you, ask them what it is regarding and explain that you are busy at the minute then ask if they can call back the next day. You give yourself time to come up with a good story and also make them think you are busy. (its always good to sound busy). Also if they try to delve too much into what the free sample is to be used for, just say that you are the purchasing department and not design/development/technology etc...

Final Note:

 Dont abuse the free sample system. Order only what you need. Dont just order because you can. If you use free samples its only fair to mention the company name or maybe do some free advertising when publishing details about your robot or when competing with it. They do you a favour for nothing so do them a favour for nothing.

hi

yeah i agree with you paulstreats. when i order samples, i do tell them the purpose. its better you explain it to them in detail, because they might suggest some new and efficient products for the prototyping.
