Zorgketron Rebuild
« on: August 11, 2009, 10:26:00 AM »
once apon a time there was a robot named Zorgketron known for his mechanical chopping axe and of course his good looks (and somewhat less known for having no microcontroler at all yet retaining full range of movement thanks to his half Hbridge composed of 2 relays all of which were completely reused. )

his original purpose was to win a contest for electro tech online (excuse the hello in the vid) though he he lost miserably due to the hatred and feer he imbued into the hearts of its' members (and there was a blinking christmas tree to contend with :.(  )

unfortunately after many hours of senselessly killing innocents and petting cute puppies Zorgketron finally met a most terrible enemy, the storage bin of crushing death

now i feel it is time to rebuild this fine robot of death stronger, better and faster then he ever was before. of course he will also be more intelligent with his new arduino brain! i'll keep you guys informed on his progress.

very nice, it will be interesting to see how you rebuild, or what you intend on upgrading in him :)

just replaced the motors. the old ones came off a roomba and had to be cut and glued in about 100 places just to fit the first time around. if that wasn't enough they've rusted to bits! these new ones came off ebay for pretty cheep (forget how cheep) and after a bit of dissasembly i modified them to fit on the old chassis. luckily there were some longer screws on the old motors that fit on the new ones. these motors are only 30 rpm but i might experiment by switching around some gears later. in any case i don't think i need a motor controler for these so i'm going to use an H bridge instead

i use storage bins, but, small ones.  you could probably buy some small ones that would fit inside the big one you have already.

ya it seems the surface of my desk and the floor are working well so far but small bins are probably better

yea, i have one for wires, one for components, one for motors, and one for miscellaneous, i have a bigger box that i keep tools and finished bots in.  its a underbed box, so its big and flat, and my bots can set in it just fine (my bots aren't very tall)

so i was thinking of doing a "moving" light effect with the "eyes". i don't want to waste an i/o pin though and i love having a bunch of chips on a board (it makes people think you're really smart :P ) so i was thinking i'd use a 555 and a few transistors to make a flip flopish circuit. anyone have a better idea of how to do this? another thing i was thinking is that i want the head to move in random directions but the problem is that a servo wont fit in the head and the torso needs to hold a circuit board.

As far as moving the head randomly...

If space is the issue, maybe you could mount a servo underneath the base of the robot, run a linkage off a servo arm, and connect it to the back of the head via pivot point? Its a simple solution, but iIt need not be anything to fancy to get the effect you're looking for and it seems there is some real-estate that could be utilized below him if your rebuild is going to use the same basic plan as the original...

Great theme for your bot by the way  ;D

i finished allot of asthetics but i need to figure what i'm doing for the "mouth" i've scraped the moving head idea though in favor of it being more sturdy

well the eyes are already leds so i'm thinking i'll try either something like what it had before or a face that looks a bit like the episode 2 storm troopers

nice bot, what is the chassi made from? To me it looks like 1/16 or simillar aluminium.

You could have some leds mounted underneath to give a glow effect.

ya it was just sitting in front of an auto repair shop dumpster :P. pop rivets are what hold it together though. these things are godly! i've done a bit more including adding hubs so i'll take some pictures fairly soon. i need wheels for said hubs though >.<
