Relays & The Axon
« on: May 29, 2009, 06:05:38 PM »
I would like to use the Axon to close a switch.  One way would be to use a relay.  Unfortunately I am a Computer Science major and not an electrical engineer.  Is it possible to do this?  If so how?  I checked the SOR web site and it says the Relay tutorial is not yet available.  Here is a diagram of something similar to what I think I want the circuit to look like, but remember I'm not a EE so I could be very wrong.  One difference is that the circuit I would want to connected would be 3.6V DC not AC.

yup, that will work good.
however you +5V sign is a gnd symbol... probably knew that but anyways...

no it's not, It's a battery symbol. I'm not sure it's meant to be used this way though

That will work fine, I have used that circuit many times. I usually go for a 250 ohm resistor, and ether a 2n2904 or a 2n2222 NPN transistor.

That *may* work as the schematic is correct. However it also depends on both the voltage rating of that relay, and the current rating of that transistor.

Also, how long you plan to have the switch on? It's possible that the transistor will heat up over time and fry. My preference would be to replace that resistor and transistor for a high efficiency MOSFET and back-emf protection diode.

I want the circuit to be on for a duration of 1-20 seconds repeating every 60 seconds.

do you know what voltage is needed to close the relay you are using?
if you are keeping it on for only 1-20 seconds and it has a 60 second cooldown i think you should be fine.
and if not chuck on a heatsink.
