Heating Tube for Nylon Muscle Manufacture
« on: March 02, 2015, 05:14:50 PM »
I want to build / obtain a heating tube for making nylon muscles, that can reach up to 500 F.

I'm thinking a ceramic tube wrapped in resistance wire.
Inside would be a metal rod that the muscle would be wrapped around.

Any suggestions on
- the best gauge Nicrome wire to get (or a general heating element)
- what would be best to insulate the outside with to conserve heat,
- and what would make a good power supply for this type of application?

Perhaps the outside insulator could be concrete; 500 F isn't all that high of a temperature.
It would be nice to have something pourable so I could easily create holes for guide rods.

 ;D Hello!
I have tried to work with this type of problem, and have generated
a solution that worked for me, and you have suggested.
Use ceramics; They can endure high temperatures, relatively easy to handle;
lighter than concrete, and the technology for this type of material is readily
avaliable. I would look on the website of instructables, which may help.
On your outside insulator, concrete, it may be the best solution, to avoid accidental
incidents. (protection for you) There are different types of concrete, in which you could select
to see which one best suited your purposes. Another type of insulator is a ceramic cloth,
used in oil fired funaces, and relatively cheap. A power supply would depend on the heating
element that you would choose to use. If AC, then you would want a temperature controller,
along with feedback to maintain the temperature. Perhaps even a MCU to ensure a quality
that you are satisfied with? ??? Sounds interesting..... ;D ;D ;D
