If you have access to lots of female headers/crimp connectors, roboduino should be fine.

if you plan to use the roboduino, I would suggest buying a bunch of these:  https://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=3846&Product_Name=Futaba_Servo_Lead_Male_30CM (https://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=3846&Product_Name=Futaba_Servo_Lead_Male_30CM)

They plug directly into the pins on the Roboduino, and the free ends can be used to solder to any sensors you may need.

If you use the arduino/robotuino it is programed in C. It also has a lot of source code to teach you how to use everything with it. You can download the arduino software without an arduino and play with it if you want http://arduino.cc/en/Main/Software (http://arduino.cc/en/Main/Software)
