Title: Need a custom made part? Metal, Plastic, 3D prototype designs? We can build it!
Post by: Kobratek on February 10, 2015, 03:21:53 PM
Hi guys! First post here.

Have an idea for a custom part that you don't know how or where to get? I'm here to help!
I can help take your idea from planning, design and blueprint creation, to proto-typing and actual machining a physical version of your part!

Small parts, big parts, any kind of parts. Aluminum, stainless steel, plastics etc.
It doesn't matter how big or small your project is, I'd love to hear from you!

If you're interested or need more info about my business or what I do, check out my website at: www.kobratek.com (http://www.kobratek.com)
I'm really looking forward to building something awesome together! Have a good day guys!

 :) Hello!
Cool business! I would probably need knobs off of radios made, but would that
be cost - effective? ($,?)   8)

Hey mkl!

It depends what style of knobs you need and what kind of customization, if any, you'd like done to them.
Do you have any examples I could take a look at?

Thanks!

 :) Hello!
In regards to the knobs, what kind of representation would you need?
Isometric, Orthographic, or a 3 - D skin type? What format would suit your
machines?
Also, on a related note.... :-X
I am working on my own design of an engine, and would need a special
injector built. I could make a model out of plastic, then also have drawings to
accomodate the metalurgical characteristic of the injector, as well as tolerances.
1/4" bolt size is the neighborhood of the size that I am working on.
What do you think?   ;D ;D ;D

 ;) in regards to the injector;
I will have to have it eletroplated, so that may add .0001" to
the diameter. Not much, but an air tight seal is required.
I appreciate your help.   ;D ;D

 :) Hello!
If my model is successfull, I will need your help on building a
larger engine, in the 100 KWatt range, or higher. At that point,
$$ will not be a problem.  The armature will be a task, have to subcontract
that out.(?) This, of course, is a long term goal. Need the contact now, to
begin. What do you think?   ;D ;D ;D

Hey mkl, an ortho view would be fine, just to get a general idea of the style of the knobs to start.

And that injector sounds like a fun project! A bit tiny, but definitely doable  8)
I've never made an injector before, so it would be interesting to see what kind of work would need to go into making one and how it will function.
I don't have any experience with electroplating yet, however, I do have a connection to a shop that can make it happen!

Yes, most likely will have to sub contract that out, as I'm not entirely sure how to build something like that safely!
However, I could definitely help with the rest of the project in regards to mechanical pieces etc. that you need made.  :D

If you'd like you can email me at [email protected] and we can discuss the knobs and injector/engine further?
If you have any plans made of the injector I could take a look at that'd be great too! This sounds like a fun project!

 :) Hello!
I think I will try to use Autodesk Inventor software to give you the CAD drawings.
Some people in this forum have used it, and it seems (to me) to be the most
friendly and reasonable cost software for mechanical CAD and simulation.
Please review Autodesk Inventor, and tell me what you think..... ;D ;D ;D

Hey mkl!

I use autodesk inventor exclusively and love it!
It is very straightforward to use. I haven't learned everything it can do yet, but I'm on my way.
I'd highly recommend it! What kind of drawings are you looking to make?

 8) Hello!
I have to learn the software myself, which does not
seem to daunting a task, which is a tribute to the people
who made the software. I will start with simple drawings
for simple parts, but may proceed to more complicated
3-D drawings for more intricate parts.(blow - out diagrams)
If this software is easier for you to absorb for processing
your mechanical orders, then anyone in the forum could
use this too,
to insure smooth transitions. It would be a good
investment for me to use the software, if I will depend on it
in the future. What do you think?  ;D

I agree! It is great software for modeling and designing things in general. It's very powerful but simple at the same time. I actually just use the free student trial software for my modeling, as I don't have thousands of dollars to spend on software, but it is near fully functional and allows me to make & create anything I'd need to. That would be very helpful for designs to be in autodesk format, but it's not essential! I could help anyone take their idea from just an idea to a solid part as well!

I'd love to see some of the custom parts you need made when you get some designs ready mkl!  8)

What about casings, skins,or bodies to protect from elements? Or would this be more an injection molding job?

Hey GrimBot! It depends what kind of casings you have in mind. Do you have any examples or designs I could check out? And what materials are you looking to have them made out of?

Thanks!

I just though I'd like to throw in my 2 cents about Autodesk inventor Professional: It's pretty incredible and can do so many different things that at times trying to figure out how to do only a single one can be a problem. I'm just a Senior in high school but I've been using the software since I was around 16 years old, designing parts to be 3D printed for the different projects I work on for Science Olympiad tournaments. Generally speaking, if you pay attention to the first hour of tutorials you'll be up and going with it in no time.
There are so many features that I have just discovered by messing with the menus and plenty more that I'm sure there are built in tutorials for, but as of yet I have no use for. At times, designing a part with very complex geometry, I have issues figuring out how to make it respond to what exactly I want to do just because there are typically a dozen ways to accomplish a given task and I only know 4 or 5 of those. :P For really simple geometrical parts, it's super easy to use, and I'm sure if I were intending to produce my parts with something other than the Makerbot Replicator 2 I could simplify them somewhat. (since I need to accommodate for the size of the build plate, 15x15x28cm, splitting models into sections, or else always keep in mind it must be able to print from the bottom up with minimum support material) All I really use if for is 3D printing, but I've given a shot at modeling to design a robot piece by making a properly scaled model of the obstacle it needed to get over, which turned out to be very helpful.
There are ways to do everything from combining parts into a whole complex mechanical device digitally, to physical stress test modeling, and animation of moving parts... all of which I've never explored myself.  And the best part: free licenses to any student like me, just as you mentioned Kobratek. As far as I'm aware you get full functionality with the student licenses, plus if you just use a different email address you can renew them endlessly.  ;)  Now if only I could just get the printer to work as well as the software does...

I agree! I like it alot. I've also heard good things about Solidworks, but for now my main CAD software is Autodesk because it's what I know best!

I may actually have use of Kobratek's services in order to get a simple ABS plastic part machined. I was hoping to get it done using the equipment at my high school, but the CNC machine we have isn't working properly and having to manually control that would defeat the purpose. I can send a 3D model of exactly the piece I need, it's just three ABS sheets joined at two edges with the wider center piece cut to a specific shape, and a few cutouts. I have tried to make this at home with a dremel and separate plastic pieces, but it's imprecise and I have no good way of joining the two sides to the middle piece without precise screw tapping or any way to melt the pieces together. Does this sound doable?

Hey Schlayer!

Yes, this sounds doable. Shoot the 3d model over to [email protected] and I can take a look!

Thanks
